Like many North Americans, I took up the hobby of bird watching during the quietness of Covid when things slowed down. I soon began to learn some staggering statistics regarding birds in North America. It is predicted that "two thirds of bird species in North America could vanish in climate crisis” -the Guardian. Disappearing bird habitat, record highs and lows are all significant contributing factors. Locally, close to home in the lower mainland, this past 2021 winter we saw a desperate attempt to save our local hummingbirds when we experienced an abnormal cold snap that threatened the local hummingbird population that normally stays year round. Birds are vanishing from North America in record numbers. Celebrating birds through art I hope will bring awareness to the necessary preservation of bird habitat that is so desperately needed.
